Massage Techniques

Swedish

Swedish massage is one of the most popular forms of massage therapy. It is what most would think of when considering a ‘general’ massage. Swedish involves a combination of long, kneading strokes, rhythmic percussive strokes, and facilitated movement of joints.

There are many benefits to Swedish massage, such as relaxation, pain and stress relief, as well as easing muscle tension. It can be utilized to improve the state of life for those suffering from illness, like cancer, heart disease, stomach issues, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain! If you are seeking Swedish massage for any health condition, please speak to your primary care physician first.

Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue massage, also known as ‘sports massage,’ focuses on targeting chronic tension in muscles. Many of which, lie far below the body’s surface. With chronic muscle tension, as well as an acute injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of rigid tissue) within muscles, tendons and ligaments. These adhesions have the potential to close off circulation, in turn causing pain and inflammation, reducing one’s range of motion. As a therapist, our objective is to physically break down these adhesions, to allow for better healing and less pain.

Unlike Swedish massage, being a more full body and more relaxing treatment, deep tissue focuses on specific issues, such as; chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from acute injuries (falls, whiplash, sports injury) and repetitive stress injuries (carpel tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms).

Thai

Thai massage differs in many ways from traditional massage. It can be done comfortably on the floor, a mat, or a table. The method combines assisted yoga with acupressure techniques. The passive stretching can help relieve tension within joints and associated muscles, improving ones flexibility and mobility. By stimulating acupressure points, it allows for a healthier flow of energy (Qi) throughout the body.

Prenatal

Prenatal massage is oriented towards those who are pregnant. It is a form of Swedish massage, with some slight variations. The main objective is making sure the pregnant client is comfortable, while keeping them supported upright. Research has shown that prenatal massage therapy can help reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle and joint pain, improve sleep, while potentially improving labor outcomes and newborn health. Please speak to your primary care physician before receiving prenatal massage.

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage, relieves swelling caused by blockages in the lymphatic system. This involves gently manipulating specific areas of the body to help lymph move the lymph vessels.

Chair Massage

Chair massage is usually a short session, lasting around 15-30 minutes. As it sounds, you are seating in a specialized chair, where you are able to lean forward and rest your head in a face cradle. Generally this modality consists of compression massage- where you are able to remain fully clothed while still receiving the full benefits of massage therapy! Chair massage is a great if you are planning on hosting an event with many people, such as; a charity run, an office appreciation party, or an open house!
